“Humor in Our Lives”
Brian Crane, Creator of Pickles
Brian Crane, a BYU graduate, created his comic strip featuring the Pickles family after having worked for advertising agencies for 17 years. He submitted his work to three syndications, and after being turned down by all, his wife, Diana, suggested that he submit it to the Washington Posts Writers Group. They accepted the strip, and on April 1, 2010, he celebrated his 20th year as one of the Washington Post’s most popular syndicated cartoonists. Using a Power Point presentation on our big screen, he will shaow how he gets ideas and a behind-the-scenes look at his work in progress with many illustrations and examples. The program will be of particular interest to adults and older children who enjoy the comics or are curious about the art of cartooning.

THE WORTH OF WOMEN

A Special Day for Women

Barbara Barrington Jones

“THE WORTH OF WOMEN”

All talks have been approved through CES Correlation

Committee for Education Week and EFY

Sister Barbara Jones will offer a very memorable day with practical guidance and spiritual inspiration to the Women of your Stake in a day-long-conference as outlined below. Recent studies show that depression and low self-esteem are found in epidemic proportions in the women of the world. Many women suffer from loneliness, fatigue, stress and abuse in their daily lives, and Sister Jones will help them overcome these discouraging challenges.

SATURDAY 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

10 - 11:30 The Worth of a Woman

In order to become an effective wife, mother and sister, a woman must realize her divine destiny and self worth and also appreciate her unique gifts and talents. The sisters will come to understand Satan’s trap of taking on too much and becoming overwhelmed with life. They will learn of the importance of taking time for themselves spiritually and relying on Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to aid and comfort them in times of adversity and struggle. They will gain the confidence that can come when they learn to accept the Lord’s plan for them and their intrinsic worth as a daughter of God.

11:30 -12 Instant Changes for a Better Appearance

We have been repeatedly instructed to stay well-groomed and take care and pride in our appearance. This show of respect to others and to our Creator is not vanity but is the way our prophets throughout this dispensation have encouraged women to present themselves.

12 – 1 Lunch

1 – 2 She Who Laughs, Lasts . . .

One of the most powerful treatments to bring encouragement to others and joy in your own heart is laughter. Elder Eyring says, “Humor is the key to endurance.” The women will receive insight into how to use humor to help in everyday situations.

2 – 3 Whispers from Heaven

Barbara Jones will share her life story and conversion covering the power of the atonement, striving for a temple marriage, listening for the promptings of the Holy Ghost and developing a personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. She will share her realization, following the death of her husband, that eternal love transcends the veil.

BARBRA BARRINGTON JONES SPEAKS TO THE YOUTH

This is something that was shared with us...

Satan has ONE of the greatest lies.
O is for ONLY ONCE WON'T HURT YOU
N is for NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW
E is for EVERYBODY IS DOING IT

When Satan tells us ONLY ONCE WON'T HURT YOU,
The Holy Ghost tells us ONCE WILL HURT YOU.

When Satan tells you NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW,
The Holy Ghost tells you BUT YOU KNOW.

When Satan tells you EVERYBODY IS DOING IT,
The Holy Ghost tells you BUT YOU AREN'T.

She also shared a study that says that youth spend 7 1/2 hours a day texting, video games, and internet use. Which is Satans tool to jam the channels.

MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL MUSICAL NUMBER

Thank you to all the Priesthood for singing on Mother's Day!

NEW FORMAT FOR VISITING TEACHING MESSAGE

Ensign, May 2010, 136–37

In July 2010 Relief Society sisters and subscribers to the Liahona and Ensign magazines will find a change to the traditional Visiting Teaching Message format.

“We want every visiting teacher to understand that visiting teaching is a call from the Lord and accept her assignment to love, serve, teach, and minister to another sister with that in mind,” said Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.

The new message format will help sisters understand the purpose of Relief Society, teach principles to help sisters live the purpose, provide a historical perspective, and offer suggestions on how women can more effectively watch over and strengthen other sisters.

“The Visiting Teaching Message is a tool in the hands of a visiting teacher. As she studies the messages with her sisters in mind, she will know what to share with them and what to do for them,” Sister Beck said.

On the following page is a sample of the new Visiting Teaching Message, with explanations of its new features.

Instructions Instructions help visiting teachers know how to teach and apply the message.

Relief Society Purposes The Relief Society purposes were added to remind sisters of the responsibilities of Relief Society: to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help those in need.

Message The central message will now offer specific and timely counsel directly from the Relief Society general presidency.

From the Scriptures These scriptural references will help enhance the study, teaching, and personal application of the message.

Ministering Question The purpose of this question is to help visiting teachers act on inspiration to better serve the sisters they teach.

Application Question This question is meant to prompt action on the part of each individual Relief Society sister and help her apply the message to her own life.

From Our History By reading of the noble legacy of Relief Society, sisters can draw connections between the organization that existed in the early Church and the current Relief Society program. “We are inspired by their sacrifices and desire to take our part in building the Lord’s kingdom in our season of service,” Sister Beck said.
